On May 7th, 1965, the S.S. Cedarville was approaching the Mackinac Bridge in heavy fog when it was struck by the Norwegian freighter MV Topdalsfjord. The Cedarville’s captain tried to run for shallow water, but the Cedarville rolled to the right and sank, taking ten of her crew with her.

On November 27th, 1999, Out of the Blue Productions staged the 35th anniversary remembrance of the sinking at Port Huron’s McMorran Auditorium. In attendance were seven survivors of the Cedarville’s crew along with the boson of the German rescue ship MV Weissenburg.

This video includes the key elements of that evening’s program:

  • Out of the Fog – a moving musical tribute by folksinger Dan Hall.
  • Tragedy in the Straits – the history of the Cedarville and the story of her sinking as told by the survivors and rescuer Peter Hahn.
  • A Gray Lady Sleeps – underwater video of the Cedarville as it appears today.
  • Bell Ceremony – a final tribute to the lost crew of the Cedarville.
